Schon wieder schnibbeln? Die microSIM im iPhone 4 war schon winzig – in kommenden iPhone Modellen soll die SIM Karte jetzt noch kleiner werden. Wer bislang also die „normale“ SIM mit Schere oder Stanzwerkzeug zur microSIM umgebastelt hat könnte also bald eine neue SIM-Karte benötigen. Und dabei plant Apple eigentlich ein iPhone OHNE SIM-Karte!
Klar ist: eine SIM Karte benötigt Platz im Inneren des iPhones. Je kleiner die SIM umso flacher und kompakter kann Apple das Device bauen oder einfach größere oder mehr Hardware verpacken. Stephane Richard, CEO von Orange (französische Mobilfunk-Sparte der „Telecom“), hat in einem Interview bei AllThingsD über Apples SIM-Karten Pläne für zukünftige iPhones gesprochen.
As you probably know, Apple has been working for years on reducing the size of SIM cards because they need space in the phone. They even thought about a device without any SIM card, that is what is known as the e-SIM project.
All of us told them it was a bad idea because the SIM card is a critical piece of the security and authentication process. It would be very difficult for a telco or carrier to manage the customer relationship. I think that they understood this point. We had a very constructive exchange and dialogue with them.
We are going to work with them in order to standardize a new format of SIM which takes into accout our needs with security and authentication and also is compatible with their wishes in terms of size.
I understood that the next iPhone would be smaller and thinner and they are definitely seeking some space.
Die Mobilfunk-Provider haben also mit Apple einen Kompromiss gefunden: SIM-Karte bleibt, aber kleiner darf sie werden! Wie groß letztendlich die neue picoSIM oder nanoSIM werden wird ist noch unklar.
Wann genau Apple die Pläne zur noch kleineren SIM-Karte umsetzt bleibt offen. Vielleicht kommt die SIM-Karte ja schon im iPhone 5 im nächsten Jahr…
